Introduction:
Until recently, I worked as a mental health professional for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, providing care across remote communities. Even during daytime shifts, long and irregular hours, extended drives, and extreme temperatures could lead to fatigue and affect focus and performance.

Challenges of Remote Shiftwork:
Visiting multiple communities in a day often meant long drives under high temperatures—sometimes in the 40s Celsius—and irregular schedules that didn’t follow a standard 9-to-5. These conditions made staying alert and maintaining energy a constant challenge.

A Day Gone Wrong – The Tyre Burst:
On one particularly long day, driving between communities in intense heat, we burst a tyre in the middle of nowhere. Fatigue and long hours made this stressful moment even tougher. Fortunately, having a plan, taking a short break, and pacing ourselves allowed us to handle the situation safely and continue our work.

Strategies for Managing Fatigue:

  • Plan rest during travel: Short breaks between appointments help recharge mentally and physically.

  • Nutrition and hydration: Portable meals, snacks, and plenty of water maintain energy during long, hot days.

  • Pace your workload: Focusing on one client or task at a time prevents mental overload and helps maintain effectiveness.

Working Across Communities:
Working across different communities required flexibility and adapting to local schedules, which added another layer to managing energy and fatigue.

Lessons for Other Shiftworkers:
Fatigue isn’t only about night shifts. Long, irregular hours, extensive driving, and extreme working conditions can significantly affect wellbeing and performance. Prioritizing rest, hydration, and pacing work is vital for anyone in demanding or irregular schedules.

Conclusion:
Reflecting on my time with the RFDS highlights how critical fatigue management is for shiftworkers. With preparation, practical strategies, and self-care, it’s possible to maintain focus, perform effectively, and deliver safe, meaningful care—even in the most remote and challenging environments.
