How to review your roster using the ABC approach.
A – Assess the Current Roster
• Analyse Data: Gather and review the current roster data, including a biomathematical assessment of fatigue risk, hours worked, and any existing issues like absenteeism, overtime, or fatigue-related incidents.
• Identify Needs: Evaluate the needs of both the organization and the staff. Consider operational demands, staff preferences, and compliance with labor laws.
• Gather Feedback: Obtain input from employees and managers about the current roster’s effectiveness. Identify any pain points or suggestions for improvement.
B – Build a Revised Roster
• Balance Shifts: Ensure shifts are balanced in terms of workload and fairness. Consider factors like the distribution of night shifts, rest periods, and shift length.
• Create Flexibility: Incorporate flexibility to accommodate staff needs, such as options for shift swaps or part-time arrangements. Ensure the roster can adapt to unexpected changes like staff shortages.
• Optimise Efficiency: Align the roster with operational requirements to maximize efficiency. This could involve optimising shift overlap for handovers or ensuring peak times are well-covered.
C – Communicate and Implement
• Clear Communication: Share the revised roster with all staff members well in advance. Ensure they understand the changes and the rationale behind them.
• Collect Feedback: After implementation, gather feedback to assess how the new roster is functioning. Monitor for any issues, such as increased fatigue or dissatisfaction.
• Continuous Improvement: Use the feedback to make ongoing adjustments. Roster reviews should be a regular process, allowing for continuous improvement based on staff and operational needs.
This ABC plan should help streamline your roster review process, making it systematic and effective.
